Measure your space

It can be difficult to visualise how much room a rug is going to take up in your space, so it’s important you take accurate measurements so you know exactly how much floor space you’ve got to work with.

Living Room

  • A rug in the living room should act as an anchor for your seating. It should extend past your sofa but doesn’t need to fill your whole room.
  • Place the front half of your sofa and chairs on the rug, and let the back legs sit on your hard flooring.
  • Allow at least 30cm of space between the end of your rug and walls, to avoid making your room look smaller than it is.

Bedroom

  • Depending on the size of your room and bed, a good rule of thumb is to place your rug under the lower two-thirds of your bed with the end stretching just past the foot of your bed, or place your entire bed and side tables on the rug.
  • Ensure your rug extends equally on the sides and foot of your bed for symmetry.
  • Or if you prefer, place a rug on either side of your bed or one at the foot of your bed.

Dining Room

  • You’ll want your dining table and chairs to fully sit on your rug.
  • Generally, you’ll want your rug to extend at least 60cm from all sides of your table so that when chairs are pulled out, they’ll stay on the rug. This will reduce trip hazards and also protect your hard flooring from any scratches.
